Yesterday, the Sulmona CAI with the members of the Villalago Group, and with the patronage of the Abruzzo CAI Regional Group, together with the Mayor of the Municipality of Villalago, the Director and representatives of the Regional Nature Reserve “Lago di San Domenico and Lago Pio” of Villalago, wanted to remember Amarena, the Marsican bear killed by gunshots in August 2023, inaugurating a path dedicated to her that retraces the places she frequented with her cubs.
The event saw the presence of many participants who, in a column, like a long snake, crossed the naturalistic, historical, cultural path. Starting from Lago Pio, you reach Lago di San Domenico via a hiking trail with a difference in altitude of 300 meters, the length of 7.6 km, which can be covered in 3 hours and is easily accessible to hikers.
The trail is a real brand in the tourism sector, naturalistic-cultural, with high media value, for the entire territory, since the tragic episode of the disappearance of the bear attracted attention and had a notable emotional involvement of the public opinion, national and international. For Villalago the “Amarena” Trail represents an added value, as a tourist destination, for the many hikers who frequent our territory. The day ended with a concert in honor of Amarena, performed by the violinist Angela Di Giuseppe. The event on the Amarena Bear, wanted to convey a message to everyone to enjoy responsible and conscious sustainable tourism, but above all to keep her memory alive. The President, the Board of Directors and the Sulmona CAI Section thank all the Members who participated in the event with the Villalago Members Group, who together with the tireless Member Bruno Gatta strongly wanted this project to be realized, the President of the Regional Group of the Abruzzo CAI Francesco Sulpizio for the patronage granted for the event, the Mayor Fernando Gatta and the Municipal Administration of Villalago for their availability, patronage and participation in the event, the Director of the Regional Nature Reserve “Lago di San Domenico and Lago Pio” of Villalago Silvia Di Paolo, and all the participants in the event.
